Spring Break and Bedbugs

Could Spring Break mean Bedbugs?

Spring break is approaching and its almost time to pack your bags but before you do you may want to think twice. Before you pack and put some thought into how to prepare yourself and your family against bedbugs while on vacation. Bedbugs being the “hitchhiking” pests that they are they are just waiting for the next unexpected guest to settle in for the night. Just because you have reservations at the nicest hotel money can buy does not mean that you are not at risk from getting bitten by bedbugs or worse bringing them home with you when the trip is over.

How to Check for Bedbugs

While on vacation checking for bedbugs is similar to if not identical to how you would at home. Treat your hotel room, airbnb, trailer, camp site, etc. just as you would your home, checking all areas before you settle in. Doing a thorough check can definitely save you in the long run. It can save against headache and hassle of an infestation happening at your home.

  • Pull back ALL the sheets and bedding. Check for small specks of blood.

  • Check all couches/ furniture. Again checking for blood spots or bedbug exoskeletons.

  • Check headboards.

  • Curtains should be checked also.

  • If you smell a musty odor this can also be a sign of a bedbug infestation.

Once you have thoroughly done an inspection of your temporary living quarters and have done so without any trace of bedbugs you are most likely in the clear. However, if for any reason you have seen bedbug evidence contact the owner of the property immediately. It is recommend that you do not settle in, placing your luggage where there is a bedbug infestation is putting yourself at a high risk of bringing them home with you.

Coming home

Spring break is over but before you step foot back in your home take these precautions to protect against a bedbug infestation happening in your home.

  • Inspect all luggage BEFORE brining it into your home. Vacuum if possible.

  • Check purses, small bags, diaper bags etc.

  • Place all clothings items that were taken on trip straight into the washer. Wash on HOT.

  • Check arms and body for any signs of bites.

Conclusion
