Untouched Hotels and Bed Bugs

Hotel Stays and Bed Bugs

Restrictions from the Pandemic are being lifted across the Country just in time for our summer vacation plans. Hotel phone calls and online reservations are prominent with vacation bookings in the recent weeks. But, with that hotel stay you might be booking your next pest control visit for your own home. Are you certain that where you are booking your next vacation is free of bed bugs? You don’t (really) know until you see for yourself. In recent local San Diego news stories they have been covering the increase in bed bug infestations amongst hotels. When Covid hit many hotels either closed their doors in uncertainty, or struggled to keep a steady occupancy, and with that came neglect. With neglect in combination of being short staffed it was hard to keep up on things like the necessary bed checks, and routine room cleans. Bed bugs are notorious for their hiding skills. With their tiny, flat bodies they easily hide within cracks and crevices of not only mattresses but just about anywhere. If an employee isn’t looking for them specifically there is no doubt an infestation can spread rapidly.

FACT: Bed bugs can travel 3 to 4 feet per minute, making it easy for them to travel between rooms and floors.

Opening the Door to Bed Bugs

As the doors start to open we all are excited to get back out into the world, but before you set your bags down at the 5 start resort you still want to do a walk through of where you will be staying. Just because a hotel is ranked to be one of the most elite does not mean it has not caught the “bug” through the down time of the pandemic. There are steps that you can take to check for bed bugs in your hotel room to help protect yourself from falling victim of the “hitchhiker” pest.

Hotel Check

FACT: More than 80% of hotels have reported needing bed bug treatment within the past year.

  • Place luggage and belongings by the door on a luggage rack if possible. Keep items away from the bed while you inspect the room and even after, try to keep them up and away from the floor. Practice cleanliness. Keeping things tidy eliminates areas where bed bugs can hide.

  • Bed bugs are easy to spot yourself if you do a thorough check. Not just inspecting the bedding and mattress but other soft surfaces as well. Know that they are NOT limited to softer materials. Be bugs can be caught hiding behind picture frames and simple cracks in furniture.

  • DO NOT stay in a room that has a bed bug infestation. Alert staff immediately, request a different room, or a refund if you do not feel safe in the hotel.

  • Check all your bags before you bring them into your home. Place all items that were taken on your travels straight into the washer and set to hot. This is good practice even if you did not come into contact with bed bugs, especially with virus scares being prevalent.

Hotels and Commercial Bed Bug Treatment

Bed bugs can cost a home owner hundreds to thousands of dollars depending on the size of the infestation and items that became a “loss” during the infestation. Imagine what an impact bed bugs can be to a large hotel. DIY for bed bugs is difficult because bed bugs are resilient against chemical pest control products. A professional is highly recommended in treating a bed bug problem. Thermal Heat Treatment is the safe, eco-friendly, non chemical bed bug elimination system for residential and commercial properties. Thermal Heat can treat a business with no added down time. The treatment can be contained in a single area or room and completed in a matter of hours. This can avoid the amount of customers or potential vacationers knowing about an infestation if it is not necessary.
